Holiday inspiration

Lots of holiday ideas and practical advice for our readers in May, with the publication of three extra travel supplements, in addition to our regular weekly section:

On May 17, we published a 44-page Travelmail special focusing on plans for the summer.

Travel Editor Frank Barrett picks the bargain hotspots for those who want to get away from the credit crunch and takes a trip to LA to find the perfect ‘Hotel California’; cover star Dannii Minogue tells us that although she loves to travel, Australia is top of her list;  Strictly Come Dancing star, Rachel Stevens extols the joys of putting her feet up on a Caribbean cruise and author Wendy  Holden spends time in historic York. Plus perfect Paxos, Disney’s new American Idol experience, the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and cruising the Med and the Danube.

At the back of the supplement, we created a 13-page reverse special for Enjoy England, with a special section on the south east. Again, packed with great ideas for where to go and what to do if you’re staying in the UK this summer, featuring Blenheim Palace, Beaulieu Motor Museum, canoeing in the Wye Valley, the Lake District and the chance for readers to win a holiday on the Isle of Wight.

Earlier in the month, we published a 16-page ‘Cruising just got cooler’ supplement in association with Virgin Holidays, highlighting the many destinations – both short and long-haul – featured by the UK’s cruise operators, including Barbados, the Far East, Dubai and Puerto Rico. This was a hard-working supplement, engaging readers by selling holidays off the page and offering the chance to win a fabulous Virgin Holidays cruise to Bermuda.

And on May 24, we published a 16-page, co-branded standalone supplement for Valencia, focusing on the region's varied attractions, including the beaches and resorts of Costa Blanca, the fabulous nightlife of Benidorm, Valencia Terra i Mar- home of la paella and host to Formula One and Castellon-Costa Azahar, the land of fairy-tale castles and the region's most rugged scenery.
Plus a guide to city breaks in Alicante and Valencia and a calendar of the region's most notable events including the America's Cup pre-regattas, La Tomatina and the Cinema Jove international film festival.
Readers also had the chance to win a trip to the region to sample some of the many delights on offer for themselves.
